Washington National Insurance
Supplemental Insurance - What Is It, and Do I Need It?
You already have health insurance. So why would you consider supplemental insurance?
Because your health insurance and supplemental insurance do two different jobs.
Your health insurance helps cover the cost of medical care. Supplemental insurance can provide cash benefits directly to you when a covered accident, hospital stay or critical illness occurs. Depending on the policy and covered event, that money can help with deductibles and copays - or everyday expenses such as groceries, transportation, childcare and household bills while you recover.
Think of it as an additional layer of financial protection for you and your family.
Washington National offers DPSOA members access to voluntary supplemental insurance options for accidents, hospital stays and critical illnesses. Participation is completely voluntary, and there is no pressure to enroll. The goal is simply to help you understand the options available so you can decide whether supplemental coverage makes sense for you and your family.

Accident Insurance
For the unexpected injury.
Accident Insurance provides specified cash benefits for covered accidental injuries and related treatment. Depending on the injury and coverage selected, benefits may include emergency room care, ambulance transportation, hospitalization, fractures, dislocations, rehabilitation and other covered services.
Think: a broken leg, torn ligament, accident requiring an ER visit, or an injury that results in hospitalization.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance
For an unexpected hospital stay.
Hospital Indemnity Insurance provides fixed cash benefits when a covered person is hospitalized or meets other covered conditions under the policy. The benefit is paid directly to you rather than to the hospital, giving you flexibility in how you use the money.
Think: helping offset a deductible, copay, travel costs, groceries, childcare or household expenses while you or a family member is hospitalized.

Critical Illness Insurance
For a life-changing diagnosis.
Critical Illness Insurance can provide a lump-sum cash benefit following diagnosis of a covered critical illness. Members may choose coverage for cancer, heart attack and stroke, with several benefit amounts and coverage combinations available.
Think: money that can help bridge the financial gap while you focus on treatment and recovery.
